Buying the Perfect Mattress for You!

Buying a mattress can always be a bit of a minefield. With so many options and different specifications, what is the best mattress for you?

Here at Own Furniture, we have simplified things to make it easy selecting your next mattress, after all, getting a good nights sleep is one of the secrets to a long healthy life.

Things to ask yourself...

1) What mattress am I currently sleeping on?

Is it a Foam mattress? Pocket spring? Open coil? Distinguishing what you are currently sleeping on will help you make your mind up on your next mattress. If you like what you are currently sleeping on but it has seen its best years... buy something that is similar. Mattresses are such a personal preference, buy what is right for you, not what you're told to buy.

2) What are the different spring units?

a) Open coil springs (also known as Miracoil, Continuous coil, Standard coil e.t.c)

This spring unit is the most common spring found in mattresses. The spring unit consists of around 300 springs that are all connected together. They are massed produced here in the UK giving a low production cost and making these the one of the cheapest mattresses on the market. These spring units usually come in either a 13.5 Gauge or 12.5 Gauge. The 12.5 gauge is a thicker wire than the 13.5 Gauge making it more supportive and longer lasting. Our premier mattress features a 12.5 Gauge spring unit and is one of our premium open coil mattresses - https://ownfurniture.co.uk/the-premier/

a) Pocket springs

A pocket spring unit gives a lot more support and comfort to the body than the open coil explained above. Each individual spring is encased in a material pocket allowing each spring to move individually. The benefit to this is that the pocket spring system will conform to your body supporting your back where it is most needed. These units consist of 800 springs and up. Typically, the higher spring count, the more support. Another benefit to pocket sprung mattresses is the anti-roll together properties. Due to all of the springs acting individually, if you partner is of a heavier nature you will not feel yourself rolling in to them!

Make sure you are not fooled by numbers alone! A mattress crammed with inferior pocket springs will not be as supportive as one with less but better quality springs. All of our Fenton & Farleigh mattresses consist of full depth argo pocket springs quality certificated and guaranteed.

3) What firmness is best for me?

This again goes back to what you are currently sleeping on... The best mattress for you is the one that is most comfortable. If you sleep well on a firm mattress, buy a firm mattress! It is always good to some research too. Pop to your local mattress store if you have time and see what feels good for you...

4) What fillings are best?

Fillings are the part of the mattress that offer you the comfort. There are a few types of fillings that are commonly found in mattresses, these are all explained below:

a) Hypoallergenic White Fibre Fillings -

These are man made fillings consisting of polycotton & polyester. Even though this type of filling tends to be found in cheaper mattresses when a large amount of it is used its gives a wonderfully comfortable feel. Our Premier Mattress is fine example of this.

b) Natural Fillings -

The fillings consist of the finest fibres like Cotton, Silk, Cashmere and Wool. These fillings are a lot more luxurious than man made fibres found in more budget mattresses. Natural fibres will stay plump for longer prolonging the life of your mattress and also making it feel comfortable for longer. As well as the benefit of longevity, these fillings also help naturally regulate body temperature meaning you'll stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter! Some would say it feels likes sleeping on a cloud... Who wouldn't want that!!

Check out our range of luxurious Fenton & Farleigh mattresses for that cloud like sensation!!

c) Memory Foam -

Memory foam has pressure relieving benefits which are used to help prevent pressure sores and minimise pain in sensitive areas. This is still one of the core benefits of memory foam beds. Memory foam was actually created by NASA before it was successfully tested in mattresses and to this day is still one of the most popular mattresses purchased. When you lay down on memory foam, the mattress adjusts to your shape to support every part of your body from head to toe.

d) Latex -

Latex is an open cell foam allowing airflow to circulate the mattress. As well as being eco friendly it also gives a fabulous cool feel when laying on it. All latex mattresses are resistant to dust mites, mold and have hypoallergenic properties. Perfect for the warm sleeper who doesn't want to compromise on quality!
