Buying a mattress can be a very difficult task with the huge variety of types and fillings available! Buying online can be even harder as you are unable to actually try the mattresses before you buy!
Traditional Pocket Sprung Mattresses:
- Support and Comfort: Pocket sprung mattresses are known for their excellent support and comfort. They are constructed with individual springs housed in fabric pockets, allowing them to respond to your body's shape and weight. This feature helps to provide tailored support and minimise pressure points, resulting in a more comfortable and supportive sleep.
- Durability: Pocket sprung mattresses tend to be more durable compared to foam mattresses. The individual springs are designed to withstand long-term use without losing their shape or support. This durability makes pocket sprung mattresses a wise investment in terms of longevity and comfort!
- Temperature Regulation: Traditional pocket sprung mattresses offer better air circulation compared to foam mattresses. The open structure of the springs allows for increased breathability, helping to regulate body temperature during sleep. This feature can be particularly beneficial for individuals who tend to sleep hot.
- Side Support: Due to the mattress not having to be rolled up in a box, we are able to use thick rod edges on our traditional sprung mattresses. This helps the mattress keep its shape and offers edge to edge support.
-
Allergens and Dust Mites: Traditional pocket sprung mattresses have a higher risk of accumulating allergens, such as dust mites, in the spaces between the springs. Regular cleaning and maintenance are necessary to keep these allergens under control.
- Turning and Rotating: Due to the amount of fillings used in these mattresses, the mattresses can be quite heavy. This could be a hassle when having to turn and rotate the mattress, especially if you have mobility issues.
Rolled-up Foam Mattresses:
- Pressure Relief: Foam mattresses, especially those with memory foam or latex, offer excellent pressure relief by contouring to your body shape. This feature can be beneficial for individuals with joint or back pain, as it helps alleviate pressure points.
- Motion Isolation: Rolled-up foam mattresses excel in motion isolation, meaning they absorb and minimize motion transfer. This quality ensures that your sleep is undisturbed even if your partner moves around during the night.
- Hypoallergenic Properties: Foam mattresses are naturally resistant to allergens and dust mites due to their dense structure. This makes them a suitable choice for individuals with allergies or asthma.
- Heat Retention: Some foam mattresses tend to retain body heat, which can make you feel uncomfortably warm during the night. However, modern foam mattresses often come with cooling technologies or gel-infused layers to address this issue.
- Turning and Rotating: While foam mattresses can provide excellent comfort initially, they may not be as durable as pocket sprung mattresses. Over time, the foam may lose its resilience and supportive properties, resulting in a less comfortable sleep surface.
- Initial Off-Gassing: New foam mattresses may emit a temporary odour, commonly known as off-gassing. This odour is harmless and usually dissipates within a few days, but it can be noticeable initially.
I hope the information above helps you weigh up the pros and cons of both traditional pocket sprung mattresses and rolled-up foam mattresses. Ultimately, your choice should be based on your personal preferences, specific sleep needs, and budget.
